Tiffany Haddish avoids jail time after pleading guilty in Georgia DUI case

Tiffany Haddish has avoided additional jail time after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor alcohol related driving charge stemming from her 2022 arrest in Georgia.

The comedian and actor entered her guilty plea by video on August 11, resolving a case that had remained pending for over four years. According to the Associated Press, Haddish was sentenced to 12 months of probation and must avoid drugs and alcohol while completing a substance abuse evaluation. She was also credited for the brief period she had already spent in jail after her arrest. Other charges connected to the case were dropped.

The case dates back to January 14, 2022, when Peachtree City police responded to a 911 call about a driver reportedly asleep behind the wheel at a traffic light. Officers later stopped a vehicle matching the description provided by the caller. Haddish was arrested and taken to the Fayette County Jail before being released on bond several hours later.

The original case involved several allegations. Haddish had faced charges connected to driving under the influence, along with allegations involving traffic violations. Earlier court proceedings centred on the lengthy delay in bringing the case to trial.

In May 2026, Haddish asked a Fayette County judge to dismiss the case, arguing that the delay had violated her constitutional right to a speedy trial. Her legal team said the prolonged proceedings had created professional difficulties, including problems related to international travel. The judge rejected that request in July and ordered the case towards trial.

The case was subsequently resolved through the guilty plea before the scheduled trial could take place. The resolution means Haddish will not serve additional jail time for the Georgia case, although her sentence carries conditions that she must follow during the probation period.

The Georgia case is separate from another driving under the influence case involving Haddish in California. In November 2023, she was arrested in Beverly Hills on suspicion of driving under the influence after authorities found her asleep in a vehicle. In February 2024, she reached a plea agreement in that case and pleaded no contest to a vehicle code violation. The two misdemeanor DUI charges were dropped as part of that agreement, according to PEOPLE.

Haddish has previously spoken publicly about sobriety following her 2023 arrest. In 2024, she said she had stopped consuming alcohol and marijuana and described her sobriety as court mandated at the time.

The latest legal resolution comes as Haddish continues her entertainment career. She became widely recognised after starring in Girls Trip in 2017 and made history that same year as the first Black female stand up comedian to host Saturday Night Live. She won an Emmy in 2018 for her appearance on the programme and later received a Grammy for her comedy album Black Mitzvah.

With the Georgia case now resolved, Haddish faces no additional incarceration from the 2022 arrest. Her immediate legal obligations instead centre on completing the probation conditions imposed as part of Tuesday's guilty plea.
