Grammy-winning producer William Orbit dies aged 69

William Orbit, the visionary British producer whose groundbreaking work on Madonna's Ray of Light helped redefine modern pop music, has died at the age of 69. His family confirmed that he died at his home on 23 July, with the news announced on Friday. No cause of death has been disclosed.

Orbit rose to international prominence through his collaboration with Madonna on her landmark 1998 album Ray of Light, co-writing and producing tracks including Frozen, Ray of Light, The Power of Good-Bye and Drowned World/Substitute for Love. The album earned four Grammy Awards and is widely regarded as one of the defining pop records of the 1990s, with Madonna previously describing Orbit as a "complete madman genius".

Across a career spanning more than four decades, Orbit worked with an extraordinary range of artists, including Blur, All Saints, U2, Britney Spears, Pink, Ricky Martin, Katie Melua and Queen. He also produced All Saints' chart-topping hits Pure Shores and Black Coffee, while his experimental electronic sound helped shape countless pop and dance records.

Before becoming one of music's most sought-after producers, Orbit began his career with the electronic group Torch Song and later released acclaimed solo projects, including Pieces in a Modern Style. His final solo album, The Painter, was released in 2022, marking a creative return after overcoming personal struggles in later life.

Tributes have begun pouring in from across the music industry, celebrating Orbit's pioneering influence on electronic and pop music. His family remembered him not only for his artistry but also for his "friendship and kindness", saying he touched countless lives through his music and will be deeply missed.
