'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' becomes fastest film to reach $500m at domestic box office

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has set another box office milestone, becoming the fastest film to surpass $500 million at the North American box office, according to Deadline.

The Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios release reached the milestone in just seven days, surpassing the previous record held by Avengers: Endgame, which achieved the same feat in eight days following its 2019 release.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, the latest Spider-Man instalment is now the 23rd film to earn more than $500 million domestically.

The all-time North American box office leader remains Star Wars: The Force Awakens with $936.6 million, although it took 10 days to pass the $500 million mark.

Spider-Man: No Way Home, the previous film in the franchise, reached the milestone in 12 days in 2021.

Deadline reports that Brand New Day is expected to earn around $27 million or more across the United States and Canada on Thursday, bringing its estimated domestic total to $508.8 million.

The film also benefited from expanded premium format availability. IMAX screenings, which were not widely available during the opening weekend due to Universal's The Odyssey occupying many premium screens, are now being shared between the two films.

Brand New Day is also set to retain premium large format screens heading into its second weekend.

On Wednesday, the superhero film earned $32.7 million, making it the second-highest Wednesday gross ever for a non-opening day release.

Only Star Wars: The Force Awakens recorded a higher Wednesday total with $38 million on December 23 2015.

The film now heads into its second weekend with industry attention focused on whether it can challenge the record for the biggest second weekend at the domestic box office.
