Jim Carrey returns with live action ‘The Jetsons’ as Warner Bros confirms new film

Warner Bros confirmed project after years of stalled attempts to bring classic futuristic family back to cinemas

Jim Carrey is officially heading back to the big screen in a brand new role. Months after becoming the centre of bizarre online lookalike rumours, the actor has been confirmed as the lead of Warner Bros' live action adaptation of The Jetsons.

Warner Bros announced the project in a letter to shareholders, ending months of speculation surrounding the long discussed film. The studio confirmed that Carrey will headline the adaptation of the beloved Hanna Barbera animated series, marking his first live action film outside the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise in more than a decade.

The announcement comes after Carrey unexpectedly dominated social media earlier this year following his appearance in France, where he accepted an award while speaking entirely in French. Clips from the event quickly spread online, with some users falsely claiming the actor looked like an impersonator or body double. The claims remained unsubstantiated and were dismissed as internet speculation, but they generated widespread discussion across social media platforms.

Now, attention has shifted from those viral rumours to Carrey's next major Hollywood project.

According to Warner Bros, The Jetsons is finally moving forward after numerous failed attempts to revive the iconic property. Reports about the adaptation have surfaced repeatedly over the past two decades, with several filmmakers and creative teams attached at different stages before the projects were ultimately shelved.

Earlier industry speculation suggested Jurassic World Dominion director Colin Trevorrow could direct the film, although Warner Bros has not officially confirmed who will helm the project.

Carrey's casting also represents another significant career milestone. Apart from voicing and portraying Dr Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik in the Sonic the Hedgehog films, he has largely stepped away from leading major studio productions. His previous non Sonic feature was the 2016 thriller Dark Crimes.

The actor previously indicated he was considering retirement after Sonic the Hedgehog 2, later explaining that returning for subsequent films partly came down to practical reasons. While promoting Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Carrey joked that he returned because he had "bought a lot of stuff" and needed the money, a remark that quickly became one of the film's most widely shared interview moments.

Carrey is also expected to reprise his role as Eggman in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, scheduled for release in 2027, giving the actor two major studio projects currently connected to his comeback.

Originally created by Hanna Barbera, The Jetsons debuted in 1962 and followed the futuristic adventures of George Jetson, his wife Jane, their children Judy and Elroy, along with robotic maid Rosie. The animated sitcom became one of television's most recognisable depictions of life in the future, complete with flying cars, automated homes and space age technology.
