Dave Bautista in talks to replace Ryan Hurst as Kratos in Amazon’s ‘God of War’ series

Production aims to resume this autumn after casting change followed injury related delay on high profile adaptation

Dave Bautista is in talks to take over the role of Kratos in Amazon's upcoming television adaptation of God of War, following Ryan Hurst's departure from the highly anticipated series.

According to multiple industry reports, Bautista has entered negotiations to play the iconic Spartan warrior after Hurst exited the production because of a torn bicep suffered while filming earlier this year. The injury reportedly delayed production significantly, pushing a possible return until 2027 before Amazon MGM Studios and Sony decided to recast the lead role in an effort to resume filming this autumn.

Neither Amazon nor Sony has officially confirmed Bautista's casting, although Amazon representatives declined to comment following reports that negotiations were underway.

The possible casting has generated considerable excitement among gaming and film fans, many of whom have long viewed Bautista as a natural fit for Kratos because of his imposing physical presence and acting experience. The former WWE champion has successfully transitioned into Hollywood over the past decade, building an impressive résumé that extends well beyond action films.

Bautista first gained worldwide recognition through professional wrestling before starring as Drax in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy films and other entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He has also appeared in Blade Runner 2049, Spectre, Army of the Dead, Knock at the Cabin and Denis Villeneuve's Dune films. Most recently, he voiced a character in Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender and continues to collaborate frequently with Amazon MGM Studios through projects including My Spy, My Spy: The Eternal City, The Wrecking Crew, Road House 2 and the forthcoming remake of Highlander.

The television adaptation has already received a two season order from Amazon Prime Video, underlining the company's confidence in one of PlayStation's biggest gaming franchises. Rather than adapting Kratos' Greek mythology storyline, the series will follow the narrative established in the acclaimed 2018 God of War game and its sequel, focusing on Kratos' relationship with his young son Atreus.

The official story follows father and son as they journey to scatter the ashes of Kratos' late wife Faye while confronting powerful figures from Norse mythology. Along the way, Kratos struggles to become a better father, while Atreus challenges his father's understanding of compassion and humanity.

Callum Vinson remains attached to portray Atreus, while the supporting cast includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Max Parker as Heimdall, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Ed Skrein as Baldur, and Danny Woodburn alongside Jeff Gulka as Brok and Sindri.

The series is being led by acclaimed television writer Ronald D Moore, who serves as writer, executive producer and showrunner. Frederick E O Toye is directing the opening two episodes, with Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios, PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions jointly producing the adaptation.
