Sony Pictures boss Tom Rothman says 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s record box office proves theaters are thriving again

Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman has declared that the theatrical movie business is stronger than ever following the historic box office success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

The Marvel blockbuster starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker earned around $932 million worldwide in its opening weekend, becoming the second-biggest global debut in box office history.

The record-breaking performance, combined with Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, helped create the biggest collective weekend ever for cinemas. Rothman said the success showed that audiences still value the big-screen experience and that movies continue to bring people together across generations and cultures.

Speaking about the future of the Spider-Man franchise, Rothman said Sony would welcome Tom Holland’s return as Peter Parker. While no new sequel has officially been confirmed, he acknowledged there is a possibility of another Spider-Man film with Holland.

Rothman also addressed the challenges facing superhero movies, saying audiences now expect fresh stories rather than predictable entries. He credited Spider-Man: Brand New Day for standing out because of its emotional storytelling and character-driven approach.

The Sony executive discussed the studio’s wider Marvel plans, revealing that no additional Sony Marvel character projects are currently in active development following mixed reactions to films such as Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web.

Rothman also expressed confidence in Sony’s upcoming Beatles film series, saying the current box office recovery proves audiences are interested in special cinematic events. He additionally confirmed that Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood sequel, Cliff Booth, moved to Netflix because director David Fincher is tied to the streaming platform.
