Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' sparks boom in mythology and classical literature sales

Christopher Nolan's blockbuster The Odyssey is not only dominating the global box office but also inspiring a remarkable resurgence in interest in Greek mythology and classical literature, with sales of Homer's ancient epic soaring across the UK.

According to market research firm NielsenIQ, UK print sales of The Odyssey have risen by an astonishing 1,400% in the four weeks to July 25 compared with the same period last year. Emily Wilson's acclaimed 2017 translation has been among the biggest beneficiaries, while Waterstones reported that sales of her edition have increased by more than 1,000%, alongside growing demand for other translations of the epic.

The film has also fuelled interest in related works of classical literature. NielsenIQ reported significant increases in sales of Homer's The Iliad, Madeline Miller's Circe and Margaret Atwood's The Penelopiad. Meanwhile, Stephen Fry's retelling of The Odyssey has climbed to the top of Amazon UK's history bestseller chart, with his books Mythos and Troy also ranking among the retailer's bestsellers.

The renewed fascination extends beyond printed books. Spotify has recorded a 310% surge in searches for audiobook versions of The Odyssey, while language-learning platforms have also reported increased interest in Greek as audiences seek to engage more deeply with the story behind Nolan's film.

Academics have welcomed the phenomenon, describing it as an opportunity to introduce more people to the study of Classics. Richard Kendall, a lecturer in Classics at the University of Exeter, said the sales boom demonstrates that readers remain captivated by ancient myths, noting that these stories have endured for more than 2,000 years because they continue to resonate with modern audiences.

Starring Matt Damon as Odysseus alongside Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, The Odyssey has become one of the year's biggest cinematic successes. Beyond its commercial achievements, the film appears to be rekindling public interest in one of the world's most influential literary works and the wider world of Greek mythology.
