Is the ‘New Girl’ cast preparing to return? Max Greenfield says reunion is finally happening

Actor praised reunion scripts while longtime cast friendships continued years after beloved comedy ended

Fans of New Girl may finally have reason to celebrate after Max Greenfield revealed that a reunion project is moving forward. The actor, who played the fan favourite Schmidt throughout the sitcom's seven season run, shared the encouraging update during a television appearance, suggesting that the long discussed return is progressing behind the scenes.

Greenfield appeared on Today with Jenna & Sheinelle, where he was asked why a New Girl reunion had yet to happen. Rather than dismissing the possibility, the actor offered an optimistic response that immediately sparked excitement among the show's loyal fan base.

"As far as I know, it's happening," Greenfield said.

He went even further by revealing that he has already read material connected to the project.

"I've seen scripts, they're amazing," he added.

Although Greenfield did not provide details about the format, production schedule or returning cast members, his comments mark one of the strongest indications yet that a reunion is actively being developed.

New Girl originally premiered in September 2011 and concluded in May 2018 after seven successful seasons. The comedy starred Zooey Deschanel as Jessica Day alongside Greenfield, Jake Johnson, Lamorne Morris, Hannah Simone and Damon Wayans Jr. Over the years, the ensemble became known for its chemistry, helping the series build a dedicated audience that has continued to grow through streaming platforms.

Speculation about a reunion has persisted for several years, with cast members regularly facing questions during interviews. Greenfield's latest remarks follow similar conversations involving several of his former co stars, who have consistently expressed affection for both the series and one another.

Recently, Lamorne Morris joked during an appearance on Today that Jake Johnson was the only person preventing the reunion from happening. Morris playfully suggested that Johnson had become too busy after landing major Hollywood projects, making clear that the comments were made in jest.

Johnson himself recently reflected on the show's lasting importance while promoting his Apple TV series Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed. Looking back on the sitcom, he said it still occupies a special place in his life because of the friendships it created.

"It definitely does not feel like yesterday. It feels like a long time ago, but I'm still so close to the whole cast," Johnson said.

He also described New Girl as "a dream" and praised the show's passionate audience, crediting its success with helping create later opportunities in his career.

Earlier this year, Greenfield also spoke warmly about his former castmates during an interview with People. He explained that whenever the group comes together, they immediately fall back into the same rhythm that made their on screen friendships so memorable.

"If you put us together in any circumstance, we go right back," he said in February 2026. He also revealed that the cast members continue to stay in regular contact, mentioning that he had exchanged messages with Johnson earlier that same day.
