Tom Holland reveals 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' cut that cast hated before final version

Tom Holland has revealed that Spider-Man: Brand New Day almost looked very different, admitting there was an early version of the film that he and the creative team strongly disliked before the final cut reached cinemas.

Speaking about the latest Marvel blockbuster, Holland explained that the production went through multiple edits during post production. One particular version stood out for the wrong reasons after it incorporated feedback from various early viewers instead of following the filmmakers' original creative direction.

"We've seen loads of different cuts of this movie," Holland said. "One of the cuts was, they took all of the notes from all of the random people that saw the film, and they changed the movie. And then, we watched it and we hated it."

The actor added that the experiment quickly demonstrated that trying to satisfy every opinion was not always the best approach. "It totally didn't work. And it's what the people were asking for, but it wasn't quite what we wanted as the creatives. But they learned lessons from that experience. So, a movie can change in a thousand different ways in the edit room."

Holland's comments offer a rare glimpse into the lengthy editing process behind major studio productions, particularly Marvel films, which often continue evolving until close to release. While audience test screenings are a common part of filmmaking, studios do not always implement every suggestion they receive. Holland suggested that this specific edit proved why creative judgement still plays a vital role in shaping the finished product.

The actor has previously spoken about being closely involved in the development of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Rather than remaining solely in front of the camera, Holland said he was invited into the writers' room during the film's development, allowing him to contribute ideas alongside screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers and director Destin Daniel Cretton.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day marks Holland's fourth standalone outing as Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The story follows the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, where Doctor Strange's spell erased Peter Parker's identity from the memories of everyone around him. As a result, Peter continues protecting New York City anonymously while facing new challenges linked to the evolution of his powers.

The film has generated significant anticipation among Marvel fans, with early box office projections pointing towards one of Sony's biggest global openings for a Spider-Man film. Promotional interviews have also highlighted Holland's enthusiasm for returning to the character after several years away from a solo instalment.
