Christopher Nolan has revealed that a romantic comedy is the one genre he would be hesitant to explore, despite his long career across science fiction, action, drama and superhero films.

During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the Oscar-winning filmmaker discussed his latest project, The Odyssey, and the challenges of creating the epic adaptation using 70mm IMAX cameras. When Fallon jokingly suggested that Nolan make a “Christopher Nolan rom-com” as an easier follow-up project, the director admitted that the genre would actually be extremely difficult.

Nolan explained that making audiences laugh consistently is one of the biggest challenges in filmmaking. He praised comedy directors for taking risks and said that unlike other genres, comedy leaves little room to hide if viewers do not connect with the material.

“I would be terrified of doing anything like that,” Nolan said while discussing the possibility of directing a romantic comedy.

While a romantic comedy may not be in Nolan’s future, the filmmaker revealed that he is interested in exploring horror. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Nolan said working on The Odyssey increased his desire to create a horror movie, especially because the epic features several intense and frightening sequences.

Nolan said that successful horror films require a strong concept and story rather than relying only on technical elements. He pointed to the importance of having an original idea that can drive the entire film.

Known for movies including Inception, Interstellar, Tenet, Dunkirk and Oppenheimer, Nolan continues to explore different genres while focusing on ambitious storytelling.

The Odyssey is currently playing in theatres and stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway and other major Hollywood actors.
