Fans of The Transformers: The Movie have another reason to return to cinemas as the beloved animated classic prepares for its 40th anniversary theatrical re release with a major surprise. Hasbro has officially announced that the 1986 film will return to the big screen in restored 4K quality, complete with an all new post credits scene that has never been shown before.

The announcement was unveiled during San Diego Comic Con alongside the release of the film's first official anniversary teaser trailer. The trailer confirms that tickets for the special event screenings will go on sale on August 7, ahead of the movie's theatrical return beginning September 17, which has also been designated as Transformers Day.

According to Hasbro, this marks the first time the animated feature has been expanded with additional content after the original ending. While the studio has not revealed exactly what happens in the new sequence, the teaser strongly hints at a connection to Optimus Prime, whose death in the original film remains one of the most talked about moments in animated cinema.

When The Transformers: The Movie premiered in 1986, audiences were stunned after Optimus Prime was killed early in the story. The unexpected death of the heroic Autobot leader became an emotional milestone for an entire generation of viewers and has remained one of the defining moments in the franchise's history. Although Optimus Prime later returned in subsequent television stories, the original film has continued to hold a unique place in Transformers lore.

The anniversary re release forms part of Hasbro's year long "Apology Tour", a campaign that playfully acknowledges the emotional impact Optimus Prime's death had on young fans four decades ago. The campaign celebrates the legacy of the film while offering longtime followers something entirely new to experience on the big screen.

The restored edition will be presented in 4K, with selected cinemas also offering premium 4DX screenings. Beyond the upgraded picture quality, audiences who remain until the end credits will be rewarded with the exclusive new scene, making this the first version of the film to extend beyond its original conclusion.

The release is not limited to the United States. Hasbro confirmed that screenings will also take place across the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and Germany, with additional international markets expected to be announced later.

Participating cinemas in the United States will also offer limited edition concession items, including themed popcorn buckets and speciality drinkware, while supplies last.

Forty years after introducing iconic characters including Optimus Prime, Hot Rod, Ultra Magnus and the planet eating Unicron to cinema audiences, The Transformers: The Movie is once again preparing to unite longtime fans and a new generation. With a fully restored presentation, a brand new post credits scene and tickets becoming available on August 7, the anniversary event promises a fresh reason to revisit one of animation's most influential science fiction adventures.
