Two killed as rains lash Sindh

Monsoon rains claimed two lives and left two others injured in separate rain-related incidents across Sindh on Friday, as the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) stepped up emergency measures amid rainfall across the province.

According to PDMA Sindh Director General Syed Salman Shah, a child was killed after being struck by lightning in Umerkot district, while another rain-related incident claimed the life of a woman and injured a child. In a separate incident, a man drowned in Tharparkar district.

According to the PDMA report, Nagarparkar received the highest rainfall in the province, recording 108mm, followed by Chachro with 67mm, Diplo 26mm, Dahli 18mm, Umerkot 15mm, Islamkot 13mm and Khlio 10mm.

In Karachi, DHA recorded 6mm of rainfall, followed by Surjani Town (5.5mm), Gulshan-e-Hadeed (5mm) and Keamari (4mm).

In view of the continuing monsoon spell, PDMA Sindh has strengthened drainage arrangements across various districts by deploying dewatering vehicles to vulnerable locations. A total of 10 dewatering vehicles have been stationed across Karachi.

Salman Shah said that the PDMA control room remained operational round the clock to monitor the situation and coordinate emergency response efforts.

According to the PDMA chief, low-lying and flood-prone areas of Karachi had already been identified before the onset of the rains, allowing the authority to pre-position personnel and dewatering vehicles to minimise disruption and inconvenience to residents.
