Pakistan's film industry gets much-needed shot in the arm
Pakistani stars Fawad Khan and Iqra Aziz are set to appear together on the big screen for the first time in an upcoming feature film directed by Murtaza Chaudhry, with production already underway.
Director Murtaza Chaudhry confirmed to The Express Tribune that he is helming the feature film. Chaudhry is widely known as one of Pakistan's pioneers of political satire, having first gained fame through 4 Man Show and BNN .
The film is being developed as part of a Sindh Government-funded project aimed at supporting Pakistan's film industry. It is being produced by Maida Azmat, who is backing the project under the government's initiative to promote local filmmaking.
According to the sources, Alongside Iqra Aziz , Fawad khan the cast also includes Asif Raza Mir, Shamyl Khan, Farhan Tahir, while Bilal Lashari is expected to make a special cameo appearance in the film.
Sources further said that filming has already taken place at multiple locations, including Karachi and Quetta, although the producers have not officially disclosed details about the shooting schedule or remaining locations.
The biggest talking point surrounding the project remains the first-ever feature film pairing of Fawad Khan and Iqra Aziz. Both actors are among Pakistan's most celebrated performers, but this marks the first time they will share the silver screen.
Fawad Khan continues to be one of Pakistan's biggest film stars following the success of The Legend of Maula Jatt, while Iqra Aziz has established herself as one of the country's leading television actresses through a string of hit dramas.
Interestingly, this will not be the only project bringing the two stars together. Fawad Khan and Iqra Aziz are also part of the ensemble cast of Pakistan's upcoming Netflix series Jo Bachay Hain Sang Samait Lo, making this a significant period for fans eager to see the duo collaborate on multiple high-profile productions.
Although the makers are keeping most details under wraps, the announcement and the reported star-studded cast have already generated excitement across social media, with audiences now awaiting the film's official title, first look and release date.
Fawad Khan is a recipient of several accolades, including a Filmfare Award, two Lux Style Awards, and six Hum Awards.
He began his acting career on the television sitcom, Jutt and Bond. He formed an alternative rock band, Entity Paradigm, with the show's co-stars and began his music career as its lead singer. The band appeared on the finale of Pepsi Battle of the Bands in 2002 and Khan became known for its 2003 debut album, Irtiqa. After about 250 performances, he left the band to pursue a film career. Khan made his film debut with a supporting role in the social drama, Khuda Kay Liye (2007), one of Pakistan's highest-grossing films.
He had his first success in television period drama, Dastaan (2010), for which he received the Best Male Actor Award at the Pakistan Media Awards. Khan played a lead role in the Pakistani television serial Humsafar (2011), and appeared in Sultana Siddiqui's family drama Zindagi Gulzar Hai (2012). For both performances, he received the Lux Style Award for Best Actor. Khan made his Bollywood debut with the romantic comedy, Khoobsurat (2014), for which he received the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. He further received critical praise for starring in the family drama Kapoor & Sons (2016).
Iqra Aziz is one of Pakistan's highest-paid actresses, Known for her portrayals of socially-independent woman in the media. Aziz is the recipient of several accolades including four Hum Awards and three Lux Style Awards.
Aziz began her acting career in 2014 with an ensemble drama Kissey Apna Kahein followed by Muqaddas and Mol (both 2015). These performances earned her the Hum Award for Best Television Sensation. Subsequently, she has starred in several shows including, Choti Si Zindagi (2016), Qurban (2018), Raqeeb Se and Khuda Aur Muhabbat 3 both (2021) and established herself with the 2018 social drama Ranjha Ranjha Kardi which earned her critical acclaim and Lux Style Award for Best Actress Critics.
For her portrayal as a girl against marriage in the comedy drama Suno Chanda (2018) and Suno Chanda 2 (2019) she won the Best Actress Award.
Aziz started her career when she was 14. She dabbled into acting with the help of her elder sister. She first auditioned as a television commercial model and was picked by Talent agency Citrus. Aziz continues to appear in television commercials till date. Later she was noticed by Hum TV's co-producer Momina Duraid who offered her a role in her series Kissey Apna Kahein. She acted along with Arij Fatyma, Danish Taimoor, Shabbir Jan and other senior actors in the series. She followed her acting career with a leading role in another Hum TV drama series Muqaddas, an adaptation of Adeel Razzak's novel of the same name. The series proved to be the breakthrough for her and she received Hum Award for Best Television Sensation female.
