Is the viral Nicole Kidman tribute photo real? AI-generated image sparks backlash after Sam Neill's death

A viral image of Nicole Kidman mourning Sam Neill is making waves online, but all is not what it seems.

A viral image appearing to show Nicole Kidman tearfully mourning the late Sam Neill has been confirmed to be AI-generated, reigniting concerns over the spread of fabricated celebrity content on social media.

The image, which circulated widely on Facebook after Neill's death on July 13, showed Kidman holding a framed photo of herself with her Dead Calm co-star alongside a caption claiming she was honoring her "friend for life." However, the tribute was not genuine and was created using artificial intelligence.

The manipulated image was shared by the Facebook page Golden Era Hollywood, which has more than 330,000 followers and regularly posts AI-generated images of celebrities in emotional scenarios. Similar fabricated tributes featuring Australian singer Kate Ceberano and journalist Laura Tingle also appeared following Neill's death.

Ceberano publicly condemned one of the fake images, which falsely showed her crying while holding a photo of herself with the late actor.

"My first interaction with an AI version of myself. I nearly threw up," the singer wrote on social media.

She added that while many people had left heartfelt messages beneath the post, they had been misled by the fabricated image.

"I feel sorry to the good people who wrote meaningful comments to this specious post. You were tricked and I kinda think this is just the beginning. I'm speechless!!!!!!"

The AI-generated posts did not clearly disclose that the images were fabricated, leading many users to mistake them for authentic celebrity tributes.

Kidman has not commented on the viral AI image. However, she shared a genuine tribute following Neill's passing, remembering him as "one of the greats" and recalling how he took her "under his wing" when she was just 18 years old. The pair starred together in the 1989 thriller Dead Calm, which marked one of Kidman's breakout roles.

Neill died from pneumonia on July 13 at the age of 78, just weeks after announcing he was cancer-free following his battle with stage 3 angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma.

The incident has fueled fresh debate over AI-generated celebrity content, with critics warning that realistic fake images, particularly those created around deaths and other sensitive events—can easily deceive social media users when they are not clearly labeled as artificial.
