Construction site regulations tightened

Dust suppression, debris removal, prevention of road obstructions made mandatory

The Metropolitan Corporation Lahore (MCL) has tightened safety regulations for construction and demolition activities across the provincial capital, making it mandatory for builders and developers to adopt dust control measures, promptly remove debris and display building permissions at project sites.

The directives are aimed at reducing pollution, ensuring public safety and preventing obstructions on roads and in public utilities.

According to a notification, no construction or demolition work will be allowed unless adequate arrangements, including regular water sprinkling or other dust suppression measures, are in place to minimise air pollution.

It prohibits the dumping of construction material or debris on streets without written permission from the competent authority. Builders and developers will be responsible for clearing roads immediately after completion of work or whenever directed by the corporation.

The MCL ordered that construction material, hoardings, fences and other temporary structures must not obstruct fire hydrants, utility services or drainage systems. Where temporary obstructions are unavoidable, alternative arrangements must be made to the satisfaction of the civic authority. All construction material and debris placed on roads or streets must be removed on a priority basis.

The notification makes it mandatory for builders to cover construction materials with green sheets to prevent the spread of dust.

The building and enforcement inspectors have been instructed to ensure compliance with safety provisions under the MCL Building and Zoning Byelaws 2020 at all construction sites.

The civic corporation has also directed developers and contractors to display approved building plans, planning permissions at construction sites.
