Hugh Jackman reveals why he will never advise the next ‘Wolverine’ actor

The actor said his own approach shaped Logan, explaining why he hopes his eventual successor gets the same freedom

Hugh Jackman has opened up about the future of Wolverine, revealing that he has no intention of offering advice to the actor who eventually takes over one of Marvel's most iconic roles. Instead, the longtime star believes the next performer should have the freedom to create a unique interpretation of the beloved X Men character.

Speaking to Project Big Screen, Jackman reflected on his extraordinary journey as Logan, a role he first played in X Men in 2000. More than 25 years later, the Australian actor remains closely associated with Wolverine and recently joked that he plans to continue portraying the character for as long as Marvel Studios will have him.

"I’m 57. I’m doing it till I’m 90," Jackman said with a laugh before explaining why he would never leave behind a guide for his successor. "I’m not going to say anything to whoever plays him, because no one said anything to me, which I really am thrilled about."

The Oscar nominated actor revealed that he approached Wolverine without extensive knowledge of the original comic books. Rather than relying on previous interpretations, he discovered the character through his own experience and gradually developed the version that audiences have embraced across multiple films.

"I had not read the comics, so I was just coming to it fresh," Jackman explained. "I learned a lot over the years. Of course, I’ve got my own take, but it must be melding in with me in some way. I hope someone just comes in and does whatever the f*** they want and makes it their own."

Jackman's comments arrive as Marvel continues laying the groundwork for the future of the X Men franchise within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While no replacement for Wolverine has been officially announced, director Jake Schreier recently confirmed that work has begun on Marvel Studios' planned X Men reboot, although he declined to reveal any casting details.

Despite discussions about a future Wolverine, Jackman is not stepping away from the role just yet. After returning as Logan in Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024, the actor remains enthusiastic about the character that transformed his career and made him one of Hollywood's biggest stars.

Several of Jackman's original X Men co stars are also returning to Marvel. Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, Alan Cumming and Kelsey Grammer are all set to reprise their respective roles in Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled for release on December 18, 2026.

Jackman's portrayal of Wolverine has spanned X2, X Men: The Last Stand, X Men Origins: Wolverine, The Wolverine, X Men: Days of Future Past, X Men: Apocalypse, Logan, Deadpool 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine. Throughout that run, he has helped establish Logan as one of the defining superheroes of modern cinema.
