Karachi's brush with terror

.

A daredevil terrorist attack on a camp office of Sindh Rangers in Karachi is alarming. It has shattered the relative peace decorum of the metropolitan. An explosives-laden van was rammed into a check-post outside the premises, with the intruders subsequently attempting to make their way in using heavy gunfire. The intrusion attempt from the outlawed nexus, allegedly belonging to the Indian proxy Jamatul Ahrar, warrants a thorough investigation to swiftly bring both abettors and perpetrators to justice. While the attack claimed the lives of three security personnel, what has come as a consolation is that the plot to take over the security premises was foiled in a befitting counter-terrorism response.

For local residents, it was a living nightmare as a massive explosion rocked the neighborhood, triggering chaotic scenes around the blast site. The paramilitary Rangers, which has been guarding the mega city for the last many decades, had put up a brilliant show by exhibiting professional excellence, and netting a fleeing culprit. This tragedy must not be buried in the annals of paperwork - as is too often the case - but must sincerely guide our future counter-terrorism strategy.

The Saturday night attack evoked a grim sense of déjà vu in Karachi's thickly populated area of Gulistan-e-Jauhar and its adjoining high-profile facilities. The city has repeatedly faced such breaches, beginning with the April 2022 suicide bombing outside Karachi University's Confucius Institute—an attack claimed by the BLA. This was followed by a day-long militant takeover of the Karachi Police Office in February 2023 and a devastating October 2024 bombing near the Karachi Airport that killed several Chinese engineers. Karachi's toxic mix of targeted violence, street crime and rising drug addiction hints at a syndicate operating from the shadows. Since terrorism thrives on this criminal underbelly, the state authorities must initiate a sweeping crackdown to restore order.
