Pixar’s Toy Story 5 has impressed critics by delivering a heartfelt sequel that expands the beloved franchise while exploring modern themes around technology, childhood and human connection.

Directed by Pixar veteran Andrew Stanton and co-directed by Kenna Harris, the 2026 animated film follows the events of Toy Story 4 and brings audiences back into the world of Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the toy community. The movie focuses on Jessie, who takes a leading role as she tries to protect Bonnie’s connection with traditional play while facing a growing threat from technology.

The story introduces Lilypad, a high-tech device designed to help children socialise, creating a conflict between digital interaction and real-world relationships. While the character initially appears to be an antagonist, the film explores a more complex message about balancing technology with meaningful human connections.

Toy Story 5 also features new storylines involving a group of high-tech Buzz Lightyear toys and new electronic characters, adding fresh comedy and expanding the Pixar universe. Although the multiple narratives make the film feel more ambitious than previous instalments, the emotional payoff helps bring the different stories together.

Critics have highlighted Joan Cusack’s performance as Jessie as one of the film’s strongest elements, with the character’s emotional journey becoming the heart of the sequel. Tom Hanks and Tim Allen also return as Woody and Buzz, continuing their iconic roles in the franchise.

The Pixar sequel has been praised for maintaining the emotional depth of the original movies while addressing modern issues facing families. Toy Story 5 aims to remind audiences that technology can support relationships but cannot replace genuine human connection.

Toy Story 5 arrives in theatres on June 19, 2026.
