Bangladesh’s anti-graft watchdog on Tuesday charged the eldest son of former prime minister Khaleda Zia with laundering three million dollars through bank accounts in Singapore, police said.

Tareque Rahman and his business partner Giasuddin Al Mamun have been investigated by the Anti-Corruption Commission, police constable Abdus Salam said.

“They laundered the money between 2003 and 2007. The ACC filed a case against them in October and on Tuesday it formally pressed charges. The court will now fix the date for start of the trial,” he told a news agency.

Tareque, the eldest son of two-time premier Zia, has been living in London since 2008 to receive treatment for back problems. The 44-year-old was detained in 2007 by an army-backed emergency government as part of its crackdown on graft.

He was released 18 months later amid allegations that he was tortured under custody.

Tareque was frequently referred to as the most powerful man in Bangladesh when his mother was prime minister in her second term from 2001 to 2006.

Zia’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) suffered a crushing defeat in elections in December to her bitter rival and current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Both women were charged during the emergency government’s regime on counts of corruption, and each spent a year behind bars only to be released as part of deals to ensure they took part in the election. Zia’s youngest son, Arafat Rahman Koko, also faces corruption charges.
