Kanye West and Travis Scott concerts banned at Pompeii following backlash
Critics argued that West or Scott having a concert in Pompeii would be inappropriate given its historical importance

Plans for concerts by Kanye West and Travis Scott at the historic Pompeii Archaeological Park have been blocked following widespread opposition from local authorities, cultural groups and residents.
According to Variety, officials have ruled out hosting the performances at Pompeii after concerns were raised about the suitability of staging large-scale concerts at one of Italy's most significant archaeological sites. The decision follows weeks of controversy surrounding proposals to bring the two artists to the ancient Roman city.
The backlash intensified due to the artists' respective histories. West has faced widespread criticism in recent years over a series of antisemitic statements and controversies, while Scott continues to face scrutiny over crowd safety concerns following the 2021 Astroworld tragedy, in which 10 people died during his festival in Houston.
Critics argued that allowing either performer to headline concerts at Pompeii would be inappropriate given the site's cultural and historical importance. Several local politicians, heritage advocates and community groups publicly opposed the events, urging authorities to reject the proposals.
The Pompeii Archaeological Park ultimately confirmed that neither concert would take place at the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Officials stressed that the venue's mission is to preserve and protect one of the world's most important archaeological treasures and that the proposed events were not compatible with that responsibility.
The controversy generated significant debate across Italy, with some supporters arguing that major concerts could have boosted tourism and generated revenue for the region. Opponents, however, maintained that commercial considerations should not outweigh the preservation of a globally significant cultural landmark.
The ban marks another setback for West's efforts to stage large-scale international performances. The rapper has faced increasing scrutiny from venues, promoters and local authorities in recent years following a series of controversies that have affected his business relationships and public appearances.
For Scott, the decision represents another instance in which concerns about crowd management and public safety have become part of discussions surrounding potential live events, despite the absence of criminal charges related to Astroworld.
While the performances will not go ahead at Pompeii, it remains unclear whether alternative venues in Italy could eventually be considered. For now, however, officials have made it clear that the ancient city will not host concerts by either artist.
