Severe hailstorm ravages Shangla crops, orchards

Stormy rains and intense hailstorms lashed various parts of Shangla district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) on Monday, causing significant damage to standing crops, orchards, and trees, while also bringing a welcome drop in temperatures across the valley.

According to local reports, both upper and lower areas of the district were hit by sudden strong winds followed by heavy rainfall and severe hail. The abrupt weather change disrupted agricultural activities and inflicted losses on farmers.

Local cultivators said the hailstorm damaged a variety of crops, vegetables, and fruit-bearing orchards.

In several areas, tree branches were also affected due to the intensity of the hail and winds, raising concerns about further agricultural losses if such weather persists.

Following the downpour, water levels in local streams, natural springs and rivers rose considerably, creating difficulties for commuters in certain areas. Some routes experienced disruptions due to increased water flow and accumulation of rainwater.

Despite the damage, the weather turned pleasant after the rain, providing relief from the ongoing heat spell. Citizens expressed satisfaction over the noticeable drop in temperature, while cool winds added to the improved conditions.

In upper areas, cold weather returned, prompting residents to bring out warm clothing after several days of heat. The change in weather has been described as both a blessing and a challenge, offering comfort while simultaneously affecting livelihoods tied to agriculture.

Residents and farmers urged the relevant authorities to conduct an immediate survey of the losses caused by the hailstorm and to take practical steps for compensation and relief to affected individuals.
