Olivia Rodrigo has released her new single “the cure”, offering fans a deeper look into the emotional themes behind her upcoming third studio album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love.
According to a statement from her label, the music video follows Rodrigo through “the cold, sterile hallways of a handmade, cardboard hospital in a desperate search to find the antidote for a broken heart”. The video was released alongside the track on Thursday.
Speaking about the song on social media, Rodrigo described “the cure” as central to the album’s message. She wrote, “This song is the thesis statement of you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love and it made the whole album click for me. I hope you enjoy it.”
The singer also discussed the meaning behind the track during an interview with iHeartRadio. Rodrigo said, “‘the cure’ is my favorite song on the album. It’s kind of like the climax of the record. It’s just sort of about how, when you’re younger, you think falling in love with someone will fix all of your problems.”
I just know “the cure” is about to become my whole personality. 🙂↕️ @oliviarodrigo pic.twitter.com/RzwgGijaqc

She added, “When you face love in reality, you realize that that’s not the truth. So this is just me coming to terms with things that I wanted to be fixed about myself or things that I thought that love would solve.”
The chorus includes the lyrics, “I thought I’d found the antidote with you / But my head is full of poison, and my heart is full of doubt.”
