Javier Bardem says he believes the tide is turning in Hollywood when it comes to speaking out about Palestine, arguing that those who allegedly create “blacklists” against outspoken actors will ultimately face the consequences.

The Oscar-winning actor made the comments during a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival, where he was promoting The Beloved (El ser querido), director Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s new drama. When asked whether he feared professional repercussions for his vocal support of Palestinians, Bardem acknowledged that fear exists but said he feels compelled to speak out regardless.

Bardem said he believes younger generations are increasingly unwilling to remain silent as they witness the humanitarian crisis in Gaza unfold in real time through their phones and screens. He added that this shift is creating greater public scrutiny of those who attempt to punish artists for expressing political views.

“I believe that those who are drawing up the so-called blacklists will actually be exposed, and they will be the ones suffering the consequences,” Bardem said, according to Variety.

The actor has been one of Hollywood’s most prominent voices advocating for Palestine. Earlier this year, he used his appearance at the Academy Awards to declare “Free Palestine,” and he has continued to criticize what he describes as silence from parts of the entertainment industry.

Bardem’s comments come just days after Cannes jury member Paul Laverty condemned what he described as the blacklisting of actors including Bardem, Susan Sarandon and Mark Ruffalo over their views on Gaza.

Despite concerns about potential backlash, Bardem said he is prepared to accept any personal consequences of speaking publicly, stressing that remaining silent is not an option for him.
