Amazon Prime Video has officially ordered a TV adaptation of Rebecca Yarros’ best-selling romantasy novel Fourth Wing, according to Variety.

Based on Yarros’ Empyrean book series, Fourth Wing is set at the deadly Basgiath War College, where students compete to become elite dragon riders. The story follows 20-year-old Violet Sorrengail, who is forced by her military general mother to abandon a quiet life and enter the brutal training programme.

The adaptation was confirmed during Amazon’s upfront presentation to advertisers at New York’s Beacon Theatre, where executive producer Michael B. Jordan announced the series order. Jordan said the project required the right creative team before moving forward at Amazon MGM Studios.

Rebecca Yarros will executive produce alongside Westworld co-creator Lisa Joy, who will also direct the first episode. Meredith Averill, known for co-creating Netflix series Locke & Key, will serve as showrunner.

Additional executive producers include Elizabeth Raposo for Outlier Society, Jonathan Nolan and Athena Wickham for Kilter Films, and Liz Pelletier and Sherryl Clark for Premeditated Productions. Stefano Agosto will co-executive produce.

The Empyrean series began with Fourth Wing in May 2023, followed by Iron Flame later that year and Onyx Storm in January 2025. Release details for the planned fourth and fifth books have not yet been announced.

“I’m thrilled to be working with this dedicated, experienced team and grateful for their passion for both the books and the readership behind them,” said Yarros.

Peter Friedlander, Head of Global Television at Amazon MGM Studios, said the adaptation would honour the fanbase and the emotional depth of the books.

The project was first announced in development in October 2023. Meredith Averill joined as showrunner in September 2025 following the departure of original showrunner Moira Walley-Beckett.
