Smith, who uses they/them pronouns, and Cowan first sparked dating rumours in December 2022 when they attended the White House for the signing of the Respect for Marriage Act.
They later made their red carpet debut as a couple at the 2024 Met Gala and have since appeared together at public events and fashion shows.
Cowan, a British designer born in Cambridge, founded his label after graduating from the London College of Fashion in 2016. Now based in New York, he has quickly built a reputation for bold, theatrical designs showcased at New York Fashion Week.
He has dressed high-profile clients including Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga, Cardi B, Miley Cyrus, Heidi Klum and Lil Nas X. His early breakthrough came when Cardi B wore his designs, which he said generated significant demand for his work.
Cowan has cited Alexander McQueen and Lady Gaga as major influences on his career.
His creative approach has included unconventional collections, such as a Doritos-inspired line based on the brand’s triangular motif, reflecting his emphasis on distinctive and experimental style.
The reported engagement has placed both Smith and Cowan back in the spotlight, highlighting their personal and professional partnership.
