Army should not make independent decisions: Sanaullah

Punjab law minister Rana Sanaullah said the army should not be allowed to make decisions independently or decide on matters of foreign policy, Express 24/7 reported on Monday.

Talking to the media, Sanaullah said the military leadership has been influencing policies regarding North Waziristan and Afghanistan for the last two decades.

He said it is now necessary that decisions are made under political leadership.

The law minister said matters of foreign policy should be brought into the parliament.

As political parties, both allies and those in the opposition, carefully followed the government’s reactions to American allegations, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani announced on Sunday that he will soon convene a conference of all parties to apprise them on the situation.

According to a statement issued by the prime minister’s office, Gilani met the heads of some political parties and telephoned others, telling them that Pakistan was facing a real threat and that the situation demanded all of them to unite. The statement, however, did not specify where these threats emanate from.

The statement also did not say when the conference could take place and officials said the schedule of the political parties’ meeting will be finalised later.

Political leadership like you (Rana Sanaullah) should have no right to even to talk about the national security or foreign policy. First stop patronising the proscribed organizations who are risking national security by conducting terrorist acts against our own fellow citizens.
