Netflix has surpassed Crunchyroll as the leading platform for anime streaming in most major markets outside Japan and China, according to a new global report.

The findings come from GEM Partners’ 2026 Anime Global White Paper, which surveyed around 15,000 people across 15 countries to analyze anime viewing habits worldwide.

According to the report, Netflix ranked as the most popular platform for anime in seven out of nine key regions, including the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Brazil. The shift marks a significant moment in the industry, as Crunchyroll has long been considered the primary destination for dedicated anime fans due to its extensive catalog and simulcast offerings.

Netflix’s growing dominance is also supported by its internal data, with the company previously revealing that more than half of its global subscribers now watch anime content on the platform.

While Crunchyroll still offers a larger overall library of anime titles, Netflix has focused on high-profile exclusives and originals to strengthen its position. Series like Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and Devilman Crybaby have played a key role in attracting wider audiences beyond traditional anime fans.

Popularity trends vary by region, with long-running franchises like Naruto and Boruto performing particularly well outside Japan, while newer titles such as Jujutsu Kaisen continue to see strong global appeal.

The shift also comes as Crunchyroll explores changes to its business model, including subscription price increases and plans to expand into gaming. Meanwhile, Netflix has already integrated gaming features into its platform, further broadening its entertainment ecosystem.

The report highlights a broader trend: anime is no longer niche. With mainstream platforms like Netflix leading the charge, the genre is reaching larger, more diverse audiences than ever before.
