A shipment of KitKat bars has become the centre of widespread online attention following a large-scale theft that prompted heightened security measures and a subsequent marketing campaign.

In March, thieves stole more than 12 tonnes of KitKat products, taking a truck carrying 413,793 individual bars. The scale of the incident led to significant online discussion.

Attention increased further when KitKat delivery trucks in Canada were seen travelling with security convoys, including black SUVs. The sightings followed a job listing seeking “professional security guards” with experience in protecting high-value goods.

Footage of the convoys circulated widely online. In one Instagram video filmed in Toronto, content creator Shawn Molko commented, “KitKat is taking no chances here. This is presidential-level protection. Either they don’t want any more break-ins, or they got Beyoncé in that truck.”

Similar clips shared on TikTok accumulated large view counts, with users debating whether the security presence was genuine or part of a staged effort.

Some viewers suggested it was a marketing initiative, with comments including, “Okay, now I’m convinced it’s just a media stunt,” and “I hope the marketing team got a massive raise.”

But actually if anyone knows where they were going and if they’re giving out free KitKats please let me know in the comments. #kitkatheist #kitkat #torontovlog #dayinthelife

KitKat later confirmed that the convoy strategy was part of a campaign developed by agency Courage. Founder Joel Holtby stated, “Rather than relying on heavy messaging, we tapped into a distinctly Canadian sensibility. No explanation needed: just a KitKat delivery truck, fully escorted as if it were high-value cargo.”
