RAWALPINDI:

The 47th death anniversary of former Prime Minister and founding chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, will be observed today (Saturday) at the site of the former Central Jail in Rawalpindi, where he was executed on April 4, 1979. The execution site is now part of Jinnah Park.

Local party leaders, including City President Khurram Rasool and Secretary Asif Akbar, along with district and divisional office-bearers, are expected to attend.

Representatives of the women's wing, led by Sameera Gul, and lawyers from the High Court and District Bar, under the leadership of Divisional President Masood Shah Advocate, will also participate. Floral tributes will be laid at the historic site.

Party leaders from the twin cities, including Khurram Rasool, Sibt Bukhari, Malik Khalid Nawaz "Bobby", Chaudhry Iftikhar, Rashid Chauhan and G M Shah Advocate, say Bhutto's execution was the result of an international conspiracy, asserting that his continued leadership could have united the Muslim world.

They highlighted his legacy, citing achievements such as hosting the Islamic Summit in Lahore, advancing Pakistan's nuclear and missile programmes, introducing national identity documentation, establishing Karachi Steel Mills, and framing the consensus 1973 Constitution.

The speakers further expressed confidence that the PPP would secure a decisive victory in the next general elections.
