Quetta Gladiators produced a dominant all-round performance to defeat Hyderabad Kingsmen by 40 runs in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 11 at the Gaddafi Stadium on Sunday, registering a much-needed win under captain Saud Shakeel.

Defending a competitive total of 174-8, Gladiators’ bowlers combined effectively to restrict Kingsmen to 134-8 in their 20 overs, with Abrar Ahmed and Ahmed Daniyal leading the charge.

Chasing 175, Hyderabad never found momentum after losing opener Saim Ayub in the first over. The left-hander struck two boundaries before falling for eight, undone by a sharp bouncer from Alzarri Joseph.

Abrar then made an immediate impact, dismissing Maaz Sadaqat for a duck in the next over and later removing Usman Khan for 14 as Kingsmen slipped to 37-3 inside the powerplay.

Saad Ali and Marnus Labuschagne attempted to rebuild, guiding the total past 50, but Usman Tariq broke the stand by dismissing Saad for seven. Shakeel joined the act soon after, removing Labuschagne for 23 to leave Kingsmen in trouble at 57-5.

A 48-run partnership between Irfan Khan and Hassan Khan briefly revived hopes of a fightback. Hassan struck a brisk 31 off 19 balls, while Irfan added 33, but the resistance was short-lived.

Ahmed Daniyal struck to remove Hassan in the 15th over, while Abrar returned to dismiss Irfan, effectively ending the contest. Daniyal then accounted for Hammad Azam as Kingsmen fell well short of the target, finishing on 134-8.

Earlier, Gladiators had posted 174-8 after recovering from an early wobble. Captain Shakeel opted to bat but was dismissed for four by Riley Meredith in the second over. Meredith struck again soon after to remove Rilee Rossouw for a duck, leaving Quetta under pressure at 21-2.

Shamyl Hussain and Hasan Nawaz then rebuilt the innings with a composed 89-run partnership that proved decisive. The pair rotated the strike well and punished loose deliveries, steadily shifting momentum back in Gladiators’ favour.

Shamyl continued his impressive start to the season, scoring 54 off 41 balls with three fours and three sixes to register his second consecutive half-century. Hasan Nawaz also impressed, reaching his fourth PSL fifty as the duo laid a strong platform.

Meredith eventually broke the stand, dismissing Shamyl, but Hasan continued to anchor the innings before a brief collapse threatened to derail Gladiators’ progress.

Maheesh Theekshana struck twice in quick succession, removing Khawaja Nafay and Ben McDermott in the same over to put Hyderabad back in contention.

However, Tom Curran’s late cameo of 31 off 18 balls provided the necessary impetus, lifting Quetta past the 170 mark. Abrar Ahmed chipped in with a quick unbeaten nine at the end to ensure a competitive total.

Meredith was the pick of the Kingsmen bowlers with figures of 3-38, while Theekshana and Akif Javed claimed two wickets each.

Despite their efforts, Hyderabad’s inconsistent batting and inability to build partnerships proved costly, as Gladiators’ disciplined bowling sealed a comprehensive win.

Shamyl Hussain was named player of the match for his crucial half-century that anchored the innings and set up Quetta’s victory.
