Project Hail Mary becomes Amazon MGM’s highest-grossing film with $300 million worldwide

Amazon MGM’s sci-fi blockbuster Project Hail Mary has officially become the studio’s highest-grossing film, surpassing $300 million at the global box office. 

The film earned $54.1 million this past weekend across 86 international markets, bringing its worldwide total to $300.8 million. This exceeds the previous record held by 2023’s Creed III, which grossed $276 million globally.

Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and based on the novel by Andy Weir, Project Hail Mary stars Ryan Gosling as a high school teacher tasked with saving the planet in a high-stakes space mission. The film’s production budget is reported at $200 million.

The movie performed strongly in key international markets, including the United Kingdom ($6.3 million), China ($7.7 million), Germany ($3.4 million), South Korea ($3.3 million), and Australia ($3.8 million). Analysts attribute its success to the combination of star power, a familiar sci-fi premise, and strong global marketing campaigns.

Other box office hits this weekend include Disney and Pixar’s Hoppers, which added $37 million globally, with $24.8 million from international markets, pushing its total close to $300 million. Paramount’s Scream 7 also crossed the $200 million mark with $6.3 million earned over the weekend.

In contrast, Warner Bros. and New Line’s horror release They Will Kill You struggled to make an impact, debuting with just $9 million globally, including $4 million from 66 foreign markets. With a production budget of $20 million, the losses are contained but highlight the competitive nature of the current box office landscape.

With its record-breaking numbers, Project Hail Mary demonstrates Amazon MGM’s growing success in producing global tentpole films and solidifies its position in the sci-fi and blockbuster markets for 2026.
