Production on HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter adaptation is moving forward under heightened security following alarming threats made against cast member Paapa Essiedu.

Essiedu, who is set to play Severus Snape, a role famously portrayed by Alan Rickman, recently revealed he has been targeted with disturbing messages online since his casting was announced.

“I’ve been told, ‘Quit, or I’ll murder you,’” the actor shared, adding that threats have extended as far as people claiming they would come to his home.

In response, HBO CEO Casey Bloys confirmed that the network anticipated backlash surrounding such a high-profile project and has implemented strict safety measures.

“With any big IP show, especially one with passionate fans, things can get intense,” Bloys said, noting that the production has introduced training around social media use and established a “serious security team” to protect cast and crew.

Despite the controversy, HBO also offered fans a first official glimpse at the series. The newly released image features newcomer Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, walking toward Hogwarts in Gryffindor colors.

The highly anticipated series, expected in 2027, aims to deliver a more expansive and faithful adaptation of J. K. Rowling’s books by allowing more time to explore the characters and storylines.

The cast also includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, alongside Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.

While excitement continues to build, the situation underscores the darker side of fandom, and the real-world impact it can have on those bringing beloved characters to life.
