Terrence Howard recalls threatening to punch producer’s 'teeth out' before Iron Man 2 firing
Howard says tensions rose after he questioned why he did not receive top billing for the film

Terrence Howard says a heated confrontation with a Hollywood producer may have played a role in his departure from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
During a recent appearance on the PBD Podcast, the actor recalled an incident at the 2007 Venice Film Festival in which he threatened to punch producer Joel Silver’s “teeth out,” an altercation he now believes contributed to him losing his role in Iron Man 2.
Howard, who played James “Rhodey” Rhodes in the 2008 film Iron Man, said the confrontation happened while he was promoting the thriller The Brave One alongside Jodie Foster. According to Howard, tensions rose after he questioned why he did not receive top billing for the film.
He said Silver approached him to explain that Foster was the film’s main star, which led to an argument between the two. Howard claimed that during the exchange he threatened to knock the producer’s teeth out.
About eight months after the incident, Howard said he lost his role in the Marvel sequel and was replaced by Don Cheadle, who went on to portray Rhodey in the franchise’s later films.
The Oscar-nominated actor acknowledged that his own aggressive behavior may have hurt his career. In the interview, he reflected on advice he once received from Denzel Washington, who suggested Howard’s combative attitude could be pushing opportunities away.
Howard has previously attributed his departure from the Marvel franchise to other factors, including disputes over salary and creative decisions. Director Jon Favreau was reportedly unhappy with Howard’s performance and had considered reducing both the character’s screen time and the actor’s pay for the sequel.
Looking back, Howard suggested the confrontation and his reputation for being combative may have ultimately cost him the high-profile role — and possibly other opportunities in Hollywood.
