LAHORE:

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has sought a detailed implementation report from the Punjab government regarding measures taken to control the prices of essential commodities during Ramazan.

Justice Khalid Ishaq heard a petition filed through Advocate Azhar Siddique, challenging the sharp rise in prices and alleging the authorities' failure to effectively curb inflation during the holy month.

During the proceedings, the petitioner contended that the prices of daily-use items have spiraled out of control, placing an unbearable burden on citizens.

It was submitted that bananas are being sold at Rs350 per dozen, while meat prices have surged to as high as Rs3,200 per kilogramme in various markets.

The petition further argued that the Punjab Price Control Act 2024 is not being implemented in its true spirit, allowing profiteers and hoarders to exploit consumers.

It alleged that regulatory authorities are conducting only token raids instead of taking meaningful enforcement actions to stabilise prices.

The plea also criticised the government's Ramazan Bazaar scheme, claiming that it has failed to provide genuine relief to the public. According to the petitioner, substandard goods are being supplied at these bazaars, defeating the purpose of offering affordable commodities to low-income households during the fasting month.
