‘KPop Demon Hunters’ directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans to celebrate Oscars nods with entire crew
Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans will bring their crew to the Oscars as KPop Demon Hunters earns major nominations

After a seven-year journey from concept to global hit, KPop Demon Hunters directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans are heading to the Oscars, and they’re bringing their crew with them.
The Netflix animated phenomenon, released in June, became the streamer’s most-watched title and grew into a full-blown franchise moment, complete with merchandise, food tie-ins and even a theatrical sing-along run. Now nominated for best animated feature and best original song at the 2026 Academy Awards, the film’s success has left its creators both stunned and emotional.
“We got extra tickets, so we’re only inviting our crew,” Kang shared, calling the gesture both a reward and a celebration of the artists who helped bring the visually dazzling, K-pop–infused fantasy to life. “They all deserve to be there.”
Both directors emphasized that animation is deeply collaborative, crediting the hundreds of artists who shaped the film during its lengthy production process. Kang admitted she still tears up thinking about the sacrifices crew members made to complete the ambitious project.
The film’s breakout success has also reignited conversations about streaming versus theatrical releases. Greenlit during the uncertainty of the COVID era, the movie debuted on Netflix before expanding into theaters weeks later.
Kang noted that while filmmakers hope theaters remain strong, the hybrid rollout ultimately worked in their favor, allowing word-of-mouth to build momentum organically.
Appelhans agreed, suggesting that streaming gave the film time to grow. “That snowball effect is easier to do in streaming,” he said, highlighting how audience enthusiasm fueled the film’s rise.
As for the highly anticipated sequel, the directors are keeping details under wraps. While early reports suggested a 2029 release, both acknowledged that animation takes time, especially when pushing creative boundaries. Kang compared the wait to the long gaps between Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse installments, noting that fans increasingly understand the artistry and patience required.
For now, Kang and Appelhans are focused on savoring the Oscars moment alongside the team that made their unexpected global sensation possible, a celebration years in the making.
