Protests erupt after cop kills civilian
The killing of a citizen in Balakot allegedly by a police official's gunfire shortly before iftar sparked intense unrest in city. Enraged protesters set fire to Balakot Police Station, police residences and several government vehicles.
According to sources, moments before iftar, a police official identified as Shahid allegedly opened fire and killed a civilian named Javed. Immediately after the incident, a large number of the victim's relatives and local residents took to the streets, placing the body on the road and staging a protest, which brought traffic to a standstill.
The situation spiralled out of control when protesters marched toward Balakot Police Station. The mob torched the station building, nearby police residences and multiple official vehicles parked there. The fire caused significant damage to police records and property.
Speaking to the media, Balakot SP Sabir Khan said the police officer involved in the incident had been arrested immediately. "Strict action will be taken in accordance with the law and all requirements of justice will be fulfilled," he said.
Tension remains high in the area and additional security personnel have been deployed to restore law and order.
