Nintendo has shared new details about Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream, its upcoming life simulation title for Nintendo Switch, confirming an April 16 release date and teasing weddings and babies as part of the experience.

The game is a sequel to Tomodachi Life, which launched on Nintendo 3DS in North America in 2014. Players once again create Miis and watch them live their lives on Yoomian Island, interacting with one another through player-directed scenarios.

During the latest presentation, Nintendo focused on expanded customisation and social systems rather than the series’ more surreal moments.

Character creation uses familiar Mii tools, with players able to select gender options including male, female or nonbinary, as well as dating preferences.

Customisation has been expanded to include features such as face paint, clothing, building exteriors, terrain and pets, including hand-drawn animals shown during the presentation.

Players can define personality traits, assign quirks such as eating animations, and set specific phrases Miis will use in conversations.

Interactions can be influenced directly, including placing Miis together to encourage friendships or prompting conversations by typing discussion topics that are spoken by an automated voice. Housing options allow up to eight Miis to live together in a single large home.

Romantic storylines return, with Miis able to develop crushes, confess feelings and experience rejection. Nintendo emphasised that while players can guide situations, Miis retain agency and make final decisions themselves.

The presentation concluded with scenes showing a wedding and a crawling baby. Nintendo did not confirm whether children will grow into playable Miis or remain visual elements. As the game runs in real time, Miis continue living their lives even when players are not actively playing.

Beyond character interactions, players can extensively redesign Yoomian Island, relocating buildings, altering land masses and managing shops, galleries and a news station.

Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream launches on April 16 for Nintendo Switch and will also be playable on Switch 2.
