Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming God of War TV series has cast Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, adding the Norse God of Thunder to the expanding ensemble of the live-action video game adaptation.

The actor, known for his roles in Severance and Trapped, will portray a battle-worn version of the legendary deity.

According to the official character description, this version of Thor is a towering and powerful warrior haunted by the consequences of a past war. Once a loyal champion of Asgard and close ally of his father, he has since fallen into isolation and alcoholism, distancing himself from his family while struggling with guilt and regret. Despite his decline, his destructive power remains just beneath the surface.

The series is based on the popular PlayStation franchise and follows Kratos and his son Atreus on a journey through a mythic world to scatter the ashes of Kratos’ wife, Faye. Their quest becomes both a dangerous adventure and an emotional test, as Kratos tries to guide Atreus to become a better god while learning to reconnect with his own humanity.

Ólafsson joins previously announced cast members Ryan Hurst as Kratos, Max Parker as Heimdall and Teresa Palmer as Sif. Amazon has given the project a two-season order, with pre-production currently underway in Vancouver.

The God of War series is written and showrun by Ronald D. Moore and is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions. Several producers from the game franchise, including Cory Barlog, are attached as executive producers.

No premiere date has been announced.
