(Read: Volley heats up: ISI targeted in bitter Mullen tirade)
In the first official reaction to the slew of public statements made by various levels of the US administration against the ISI and suspected links between the Haqqani network and the Pakistan establishment, Kayani said that he had held a constructive meeting with Admiral Mullen in Spain last week.
He termed the statements following that meeting as very disturbing.
On the question of contacts with Haqqani network, Kayani said that Admiral Mullen knows well which countries are in contact with the Haqqanis. Singling out Pakistan as the chief protagonist is neither fair nor productive, he said.
The COAS also categorically denied accusations that Islamabad or the GHQ was waging a proxy war. Kayani wished that the blame game and public statements would give way to a constructive and meaningful engagement bringing stability and peace to Afghanistan, an objective to which Pakistan was fully committed.
Admiral Mike Mullen while addressing a Senate Armed Services committee on Thursday said called the Haqqani network a “veritable arm” of the Pakistani military intelligence organisation, the ISI. Mullen along with Defence Secretary Leon Panetta said that the ISI was engaged with the Haqqanis, using them as their proxies in Afghanistan, there by indirectly linking ISI to the attacks on the US embassy in Kabul on September 13.

why Pakistan wants to be used as an israel for China vs America ......... However,The accusations can't be baseless from America but hey what the hell was raymond davis doing in Pakistan, What was he doing in Pakistan, weren't we ally??
I think : Americans got nothing to take from Pakistan except nukes, rest all is a part of American strategy to start another front against China near China.
Owning trillions of reserves makes American Govt. think twice when China says " Attack on Islamabad would be consider Attack on Beijing"; And thats what American Govt. loves to hear, Economically, Americans are trying to move the business to India, face to face Pakistan.
@Truthbetold
The US has every business to be in Afghanistan. It was from Afghanistan that the 9/11 attack was planned and executed
It is as true as Iraq had weapons of mass destriction. Waging wars to uplift their economy via weapons sale is core business of America and that what it is doing in Afghanistan.
Fact 1: ISI does have links to Haqqani and Taliban or atleast had them. Fact 2: Taliban were initially funded by CIA and lionized by American media. Rambo anybody? Fact 3: Pakistan cant afford sanctions so people stop saying we can be super power etc etc. we can barely feed ourselves. Fact 4: Haqqani are terrorists if they are eliminated good for us as a country. Fact 5: US are nothing but hypocritical friends who have always stabbed Pakistan in the back hence no surprise with their statements there. Fact 6: Pakistan is between a rock and a hard place. On one hand we have threat of fanatic terrorists on another we have impending sanctions. Doom scenario.
Why Kiyani can't take actions against the thieves that our rulling our country. The politicians have put Kiyani and Pak Army on risk for fighting for U.S for nothing that Pak responsible. Terrorism has been hijacked into Pak that was not the case. Why Pak got trapped into this massive ware fare on the pressure of U.S.
Leaders of this country are govern by big thieves and Kiyani can't do anything to take them off. Looks like we are under slavery of U.S and even the Courts can't do anything to take out from this mess.
@Sajjad Ashraf:
"The US has no business to be in Afghanistan "
The US has every business to be in Afghanistan. It was from Afghanistan that the 9/11 attack was planned and executed. The Taliban government hosted the Al Qaeda terrorists who committed this act.
On the other hand, Pakistan has absolutely no business to meddle in the affairs of Afghanistan. It was Pakistan that created the Taliban and made them the puppet government in Afghanistan before 9/11. More seriously, Pakistan has continued to meddle in Afghanistan after 9/11
So, how come you haven't condemned Pakistan's interference in Afghanistan?
If Pakistan chooses to be partners with Haqqanies instead of the US, then we will be the next North Korea. We will get so many sanctions, that the already miserable lives in Pakistan will be become unlivable.
Useless statement.... who it is meant for? Americans? They don't trust you anymore. Your countrymen? They don't trust you either. Besides what is the point of telling them all this?
@Sane:
UN should first investigate and find Weapons of Mass destructions in Iraq and apprehend war culprits like Bush and Blair.
The UN never said there were WMDs in Iraq. In fact, Hans Blix, the UN weapons inspector at the time, explicitly said that there were no WMDs in Iraq. The US went ahead anyway. The prerogative for war crimes rests with the International Criminal Court, of which the US is not a signatory. At least get your facts straight.
Time for hard decissions……enought of US games let’s confront them and get our weapons and friends ready
Which friends? The Haqqanis? Or the Afghan taliban? Do we have any other 'friends' to speak of? You think China's going to help us confront the US? What kind of a delusional world do you live in? Its amusing that 11 people recommended your comment as it is so bereft of logic or ground realities. Or facts, for that matter.
As for this article, the only thing wrong here is that it took the americans a full decade to come to this point. No doubt they are ignoring their own past complicity here. But the fact remains that the Pakistani army went in search of that elusive 'strategic depth' which they never seem to find with all the money Bush gave Musharraf. There should have been zero military aid after 9/11. We would have been better off today. The army needs to be reigned in. If Pakistanis can't do it, then i'm fine with the americans doing it.
Why it is so easy an access for other countries to Haqqani network? if it's only a"Deeni" madrasah, serving Islam , We must not forget the famous Hadith of our Prophet (SAW) that every ummah has a"fitna" and our Umma's "fitna" will be "maal" so this ummah is after it. There are other Muslim nations in Asia, rich and poor , and they are ok by whatever their fate is , but we are not satisfied what we have been blessed. Why don't they allow Europeans and Americans to interfere in their politics? .
All hue and cry of US administration is to distract the attention of its own people of economic failures at home and at battle field in Afghanistan.
What a lousy and vague answer to hard hitting accusations by Adm Mullen, please answer how Osama evaded a whole decade in Pakistan under the army nose. Please elaborate which other countries have ties to Haqqanis with solid proof
@Jameel: Of course they are, naive persons like you are so ARGH! There must be contact at some level and btw so are the Americans, the Indians and all the other stake holders. Think please..
War is annihilation and destruction, ordinary people die for the deluded concept of State & beliefs. War is torn flesh, ripped apart people and everything we see around will be reduced to rubble.
For God's sake wake up , Quit War Give me peace please please
geo kiyani kush kar diya... We love our army.... tenshion pur qoom ki duain Army k sath hain.....
Sane… You are absolutely right. We must eradicate TTP just like US drones kill innocent civilians in FATA and Waziristan. TTP can be pinned down via short-range missiles at their hideouts via our own intelligence whether in Pakistan or in Afghanistan. Believe me, the only collateral damage or friendly victims with TTP will only be innocent US army personals like Raymond Davis or Indian Agency personals.
Secondly we must get rid of IMF, World Bank, USAID, and other covert donors. We must also get rid of the beneficiaries of this aid in form of our current corrupt leadership and on US payroll traitors in our bureaucracy.
For the coming 10 years, (I would call it the Uplift decade) we must allocate 20% of our annual budget for some major infrastructural development projects. Our current budget is 32bn US$ approximately and 20% will be around 6.3bn US$ which is a huge sum. We can make funds for dams like Diamer-Bhasha Dam (4500mw) in 2 years. Same could be done for Bunji dam (4000mw) and Katzara dam (15000mw) at later years of Uplift decade.
Just like our scientist developed nuclear technology and now they are on Thar Coal Gasification Project, we must give restricted funds (from 20%) by cloning and getting already matured technologies to extract onshore as well as offshore crude oil as we have massive reserves. Same must be done to achieve technology for mining copper, gold and iron from our own resourses. We could erect solar and wind industry technologies after research (which is easy through reverse engineering now a days).
Alhamdolillah we have all resources to become a super power if and only if our leaders have a will to become one.
@Lady gaga: What is the ground reality that you are taking about? Ground reality is that US has lost the war in Afghanistan and now looking for different excuses to blame Pakistan for its failure. Ground reality is that Pakistan has lost 40,000 men and women and children in this so-called war on terror but US is still not happy. Ground reality is that American aid is peanut keeping in view what Pakistan lost in last 10 yaers. Lining up for visa and charity is also an excuse that comes from people who don’t know what the real reality on the ground is. There is line up for visa for Pakistan in US as well and most of these line ups are from US CIA agents, so what would you call that. Why US is pressurizing Pakistan to expand its fight when Pakistan's own security is in danger. Dont you know what is happening in Pakistan and let me also add that line ups from Pakistan are for employment & education and investment not for espionage.
@Lady gaga
Speak for yourself ! I am one such person but I don't think US is right in this case. Being in US has taught me to speak your mind if u want to gain any respect. I don't need to be a toady like you to live here.
Now about issue. US is losing in Afghanistan and they need to a scape-goat. Pakistan is ideal for such role. They have taken a page from their old play book. They lost in Vietnam and blamed Cambodia , expanded their war to that country and then quit. How come five thousand or so Haqqani people are hindrance to peace against overwhelming US military presence with the most sophisticated weaponry in the world? Does it make any sense? How come they traverse 150 km to Kabul from Pakistan and no one notices them? And, how come people from Afghanistan attack Pakistani posts and retrieve and NATO does not do anything? Come on folks, lets be logical.
The US has no business to be in Afghanistan - well perhaps as the busrial ground of the imperial United States. The world cannotbe run on the US whims and dictates.
The world needs one more Ahnedinajad and US will run away not even counting its dead. They dare not send one soldier to Somalia. The US cannot afford to open another front. Stand up rulers of Pakistan - do at least oe right thing.
@Mirza
UN is a puppet of the US and not acceptable to us (Pakistanis). Don't you see how the US used UN against Libya. Open up your eyes dude !!!
Why all the hate against America ? - i find it really pathetic especially as most of these haters are queueing up for a visa with one hand and charity with the other. The fact is Americans with Pakistani backgrounds are sick and tired of the way Pakistan behaves. Its time to grow up and deal with the ground realities
If Kayani is saying it then it's probably true.
We have the right to act in our own National Interest. And we must act accordingly. Maybe Iran knows how to tackle American bullying.. we must learn from them.
We all stand by our government, army and ISI on this issue.
Bsically Americans want Pakistani soldiers killed fighting Haqqanis so that their negotiating power with Haqqani becomes better...
@Omair - LOL! And I second that, if the Americans have stopped being civil, so should we!
An article in "The Sun", here in the UK read - "ISI is full of traitors" (!!) - whatever they say/do - the fact is the media is spinning this completely to an anti-Pak mission...
So unless somethingis done post haste, we're heading for even more bad press...
Okay dokie
Americans establishment is sick and this will never change. They are fond of this craziness. Just ignore them and stop form of Aids from them. Also there should be an impact on our exports as the next step will be sanctions but never mind better regional trading / collaboration with Iran, China, Malaysia and others who are not really favoured nations for US should sort out the situation. Pakistan will never, ever benefit from any US AID as they are not based on genuine intentions. Just move on and get a respitory system which is not made in US.
So Pakistan IS involved except it’s not the only one in Kiyani's opinion.
