Green Day have been announced as the opening act for the Super Bowl 2026 pregame ceremony, marking a hometown appearance for the band at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

The California rock trio, made up of Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool, will launch the opening ceremony ahead of Super Bowl LX on February 8.

According to the NFL, the performance will feature selections from Green Day’s catalogue, which includes Basket Case, Wake Me Up When September Ends and American Idiot.

In a statement released following the announcement, Armstrong said: “We are super hyped to open Super Bowl 60 right in our backyard! We are honoured to welcome the MVPs who’ve shaped the game and open the night for fans all over the world. Let’s have fun! Let’s get loud!”

The opening ceremony will celebrate 60 years of Super Bowl history and include appearances from former Super Bowl MVPs. Tim Tubito, NFL senior director of event and game presentation, said: “Celebrating 60 years of Super Bowl history with Green Day as a hometown band, while honouring the NFL Legends who’ve helped define this sport, is an incredibly powerful way to kick off Super Bowl LX.”

He added: “As we work alongside NBC Sports for this opening ceremony, we look forward to creating a collective celebration for fans in the stadium and around the world.”

Green Day’s performance forms part of a wider entertainment lineup announced for the 2026 Super Bowl. Before kickoff, Charlie Puth will perform the national anthem, Brandi Carlile will sing America the Beautiful, and Coco Jones will perform Lift Every Voice and Sing.

The NFL previously confirmed that Bad Bunny will headline the Super Bowl 2026 halftime show. The Puerto Rican artist teased his upcoming performance with a short video and the message: “The world will dance.”

Super Bowl LX will take place on February 8 at Levi’s Stadium, with the competing teams yet to be determined.
