The latest expansion for Animal Crossing: New Horizons has arrived earlier than scheduled, with Nintendo releasing the free 3.0 update on January 14, a day ahead of its planned rollout.

The update, first noted by Eurogamer, is now available to download on Nintendo Switch systems. Players can access it by selecting the game icon on the Switch home screen and installing the latest software update.

Nintendo had previously outlined the contents of the update, which adds a range of new features and adjustments to the life simulation game.

Among the additions is a new resort hotel located on the pier, which players can help design and decorate. The update also introduces new items, various quality-of-life improvements, and expanded social options.

Players can now create and explore new islands with friends and family through the “Slumber Island” dream world, extending the game’s cooperative and creative elements.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons originally launched in March 2020 and became a major cultural touchstone during the early months of the Covid-19 pandemic, offering players a way to connect virtually.

In addition to the early release of the 3.0 update, Nintendo has confirmed that Animal Crossing: New Horizons will receive a dedicated Switch 2 version on January 15.

That edition will include improved visuals, mouse controls, GameChat functionality, and an increase in online multiplayer capacity from eight players to 12.

As of now, the Switch 2 version remains locked, meaning players can only access the standard Switch edition until the upgrade becomes available. Existing owners will be able to upgrade for $5, while new players can purchase the Switch 2 version outright for $65.
