People We Meet on Vacation has become the first novel from Emily Henry’s popular romance catalogue to reach the screen, and early reviews suggest the author’s work can successfully transition from page to film.

The Netflix release arrives after years of growing enthusiasm for Henry’s books, which have developed a large and loyal readership.

Henry has become a leading voice in modern romantic fiction over the past six years, with titles such as Beach Read, Happy Place, Funny Story, and Book Lovers all achieving best-seller status.

The first five of her adult romance novels have now been optioned for adaptation, with Netflix also planning films based on Happy Place and Funny Story. Beach Read was optioned by 20th Century Studios, while Book Lovers is being developed by Tango Entertainment.

The film stars Emily Bader as free-spirited Poppy and Tom Blyth as routine-focused Alex, two long-time friends who reunite every summer despite living in different cities. Over time, their carefully managed friendship is challenged as they begin to question whether their bond has always been something more.

Critics have largely responded favourably. The film debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with a 90% rating based on its first ten reviews. Collider awarded it 9 out of 10, praising its handling of the central romance and its “gorgeously shot rain-soaked climax”. The Hollywood Reporter said the film “works best where it counts most — in the chemistry between the two leads”.

Variety described it as a “slight, sunny film” that nods to “When Harry Met Sally”, while Deadline noted that it “sets the bar high for future projects”. More mixed responses came from Blu-Ray.com and InBetweenDrafts.com, both awarding 7 out of 10, while The Guardian was less impressed, giving it 2 out of 5.

People We Meet on Vacation is now streaming on Netflix.
