The international strength sports community is mourning the sudden death of Irish strongman Pa O’Dwyer, widely known as the “Limerick Lion.”

Giants Live confirmed O’Dwyer’s passing in early 2026, sparking an outpouring of tributes from athletes, promoters, and fans around the world. He was reported to be either 40 or 41 years old at the time of his death, with the exact cause yet to be disclosed.

O’Dwyer was one of Ireland’s most accomplished strength athletes, earning the title of Ireland’s Strongest Man a record five times. His career highlights also included winning the 2018 UK’s Strongest Man competition and representing Ireland at the World’s Strongest Man contest on three occasions. His international appearances and charismatic personality made him a standout figure on the Giants Live tour.

Born and raised on a farm in Rathkeale, County Limerick, O’Dwyer often spoke openly about his personal transformation. After stepping away from alcohol in his early twenties, he committed himself to training and discovered strongman competition in his late twenties. His journey from manual laborer to elite athlete inspired many within the sport.

Beyond competition, O’Dwyer was known for his devotion to his family. He is survived by his partner Layna and their three children, Sienna, Rocco, and Freddy. Fellow strongman Eddie Hall and other athletes emphasized that “Dad” was the title O’Dwyer cherished most.

In recent months, O’Dwyer had drawn attention for a dramatic body transformation, losing nearly 40 kilograms. While admired by fans, the sudden nature of his death has raised questions, though no official cause has been announced.

O’Dwyer’s legacy endures through his achievements, mentorship, and impact on Irish strength sports, where he is remembered as both a fierce competitor and a beloved figure.
