Rawalpindi sees fresh surge in food prices at start of New Year

Bakery items, meat, fruit and vegetables turn costlier

RAWALPINDI:

Following the start of the New Year, prices of food items, including vegetables, fruits, meat and bakery products have witnessed an unchecked surge in Rawalpindi.

Bakeries across the city have increased prices of buns, rusks, biscuits and bread by 20 to 30 per cent and begun charging new rates.

Chicken is being sold at Rs700 per kg, eggs at Rs350 per dozen, mutton at Rs2,400 per kg, beef at Rs1,500 per kg, ghee and cooking oil at Rs500–510 per litre, sugar at Rs190–200 per kg, flour at Rs160–170 per kg, tea at Rs2,500–2,850 per kg, white chickpeas at Rs430 per kg, gram lentils at Rs360 per kg and mash lentils at Rs550 per kg.

Rice is priced at Rs400 per kg, milk at Rs220 per litre, yogurt at Rs240 per kg, new potatoes at Rs50 per kg, old potatoes at Rs100–120 per kg, onions at Rs100 per kg, okra at Rs350 per kg, ginger at Rs450 per kg, garlic at Rs350 per kg, peas at Rs150 per kg, carrots at Rs90 per kg, radish at Rs50 per kg, green chilies at Rs120 per kg, bitter gourd at Rs110 per kg and round gourd at Rs120 per kg.

Apples are selling for Rs200–400 per kg, pomegranates at Rs500–700 per kg, grapes at Rs600–700 per kg, papaya at Rs300, citrus fruits at Rs200–250 per dozen, bananas at Rs150–200 per dozen and guava at Rs200 per kg.
