Adam Sandler provided one of the standout moments of the Palm Springs International Film Awards gala on Saturday night while accepting the Chairman’s Award.

Introduced by his Jay Kelly co-star Laura Dern, Sandler transformed the acceptance speech into a comedic monologue centred on an imagined version of his life had his acting career not progressed after college.

During his remarks, Sandler recalled graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and being advised by his father to pursue acting for one year before joining the family business.

He explained that his father, an electrical contractor, had offered him a job if acting did not work out. Sandler noted that he had little knowledge of electricity or contracting at the time.

He went on to describe a fictional future in which he worked wiring fuse boxes rather than appearing on film sets. In the scenario, he joked that he would still be married to his wife, Jackie, but living in a smaller house with “about 10 less bathrooms and a few less statues of me.”

He added that he would “probably know how to charge my own phone” and might still be stopped on the street, not because of recognition, but for physical reasons he described humorously.

Sandler expanded the imagined storyline by involving his longtime friend Rob Schneider, suggesting Schneider would have worked alongside him on every electrical contracting job.

Alongside the humour, Sandler repeatedly expressed gratitude for his career. “I’ve been acting a very long time,” he said, thanking those who allowed him to continue working in film. He highlighted Jay Kelly as a recent milestone, crediting director Noah Baumbach and the cast for challenging him creatively.

“I didn’t want to let him down. I didn’t want to let down any of my castmates. I didn’t want to let down my family. I didn’t want to let myself down,” Sandler said.

He concluded by thanking his wife and telling the audience he intends to continue making films. The gala forms part of the annual Palm Springs International Film Festival and is a regular stop during awards season.
