Former U.S. President Barack Obama’s annual list of favorite movies, books, and music is once again generating discussion — but his 2025 selections are turning heads more than usual.

Released on December 18, Obama’s year-end roundup includes a notable genre pick, marking a rare moment for a horror film to be recognized alongside prestige titles.

Obama has shared his cultural favorites every year since his time in the White House, framing the tradition as a way to spotlight standout work and encourage audiences to explore new stories. His 2025 movie list continues that approach, blending acclaimed dramas with unexpected choices that have sparked conversation online.

Among the selections is Sinners, a vampire horror film written and directed by Ryan Coogler. The film has been one of the year’s breakout success stories, earning strong critical reception while also performing well commercially. Its inclusion stands out given that horror films rarely appear on Obama’s annual lists.

The movie recently received multiple Golden Globe nominations, including Best Picture, and was named to the Academy Awards shortlist in seven categories, reinforcing its momentum during awards season. Starring Michael B. Jordan in a dual role as twin brothers Smoke and Stack, the film follows the pair’s return to their hometown, where they confront a powerful supernatural threat tied to their past.

Sinners is currently available on major digital platforms and is streaming on HBO Max, which is also offering a Black American Sign Language (BASL) version to expand accessibility.

Other films on Obama’s list include One Battle After Another, Hamnet, Sentimental Value, The Secret Agent, Train Dreams, and Orwell: 2+2=5. As the year comes to a close, Obama’s endorsement is giving added visibility to a list that continues to surprise audiences.
