Jack Black says Amy Poehler‑written SNL sketch was cut after rehearsal flop
The sketch featured Black singing a jingle about a boys' night out while his wife was away

Jack Black discussed the unaired sketch during an interview on Late Night With Seth Meyers, explaining that the comedy bit — titled “Boys Night Out” — was created specifically for him when he hosted SNL.
The premise featured Black enthusiastically singing a jingle about looking forward to a boys’ night out while his wife was away, a playful concept crafted by Poehler and Spivey.
Despite the energy and humor Black brought to the performance, the sketch did not test well during the dress rehearsal, leading SNL creator Lorne Michaels and the cast to decide not to include it in the broadcast.
Black said he agreed with the decision, acknowledging that the routine simply “didn’t land” as expected and that it was better to cut it than force it into the show.
Black’s story shines a light on the high‑pressure, fast‑paced nature of producing Saturday Night Live, where even celebrity‑tailored sketches and contributions from established comedy talents like Poehler don’t always survive to air.
His candid reflection highlighted both the collaborative creativity behind the scenes and the tough editorial choices that shape what audiences ultimately see on live television.
