KARACHI:

A rickshaw driver was shot dead by armed motorcycle-borne robbers in broad daylight near Diwa Complex, Gulshan-e-Iqbal on Monday. The assailants fled the scene after snatching the victim's mobile phone.

The deceased, identified as 27-year-old Muhammad Jamil, was a resident of North Nazimabad near Saifi College, with ancestral roots in Lodhran. He was a father of two daughters and worked as an online rickshaw driver.

According to police, the incident occurred when Jamil stopped near Diwa Complex to use his mobile phone. The robbers attempted to snatch his purse and other belongings, but Jamil resisted, prompting the assailants to open fire. He was hit in the head and died on the spot. The attackers escaped with his mobile phone.

CCTV footage obtained from the scene shows the robbers shooting the rickshaw driver and fleeing immediately after. Police have registered a case and are investigating the incident. A spent .30 bore pistol cartridge was recovered from the scene, and Jamil's purse containing Rs 5,000 and his ID card was retrieved.

Eyewitnesses and relatives confirmed that Jamil had no known enemies and was targeted purely for resisting the robbery. His cousins and friends have urged authorities to apprehend the culprits and ensure justice.

The shooting marks the 85th case of a citizen being killed during a robbery in Karachi this year, highlighting the growing concern over armed criminals operating openly in the city.

Police have assured the public of a thorough investigation and said further details will be shared once CCTV footage analysis is complete.
