‘IT: Welcome to Derry’ envisioned as a multi-season story, Andy Muschietti says
The director hints that the HBO Max series was developed with a longer arc in mind, extending beyond a single season

IT: Welcome to Derry is planned to unfold over three seasons, according to director Andy Muschietti. The filmmaker revealed exclusively to CinePOP that the HBO Max series was conceived with a three-season story arc in mind.
“For now, we’re going to finish this story — or our intention is to finish this story — in three seasons of IT: Welcome to Derry,” Muschietti said. He made the comments alongside producer Barbara Muschietti ahead of the show’s season finale.
The final episode of the current season, titled “Winter Fire,” airs on December 14. While Pennywise does not appear in the earliest episodes of the series, the show gradually builds toward the presence of the iconic supernatural entity that haunts the town of Derry.
Set during the summer of 1958, the series explores a group of seven friends who begin witnessing disturbing and unexplained events in their seemingly quiet hometown. As the children compare their experiences, they realize they are all encountering the same shape-shifting evil — Pennywise.
Bill Skarsgård reprises his role as Pennywise, continuing his portrayal from the 2017 and 2019 IT films. The cast also includes Alixandra Fuchs, Kimberly Guerrero, Dorian Gray, Thomas Mitchell, BJ Harrison, Peter Outerbridge, Shane Marriott, Chad Rook, Joshua Odjick, and Morningstar Angeline.
Andy Muschietti, who directed both feature films in the IT franchise, serves as executive producer on the series alongside Barbara Muschietti. Fans of Stephen King’s work will have to wait for future seasons to fully return to the horrors of Derry.
