Sydney Sweeney has addressed the online hate she faces on TikTok while promoting her upcoming film The Housemaid.

During a Vanity Fair lie detector video, Sweeney told co-star Amanda Seyfried that her public TikTok page, @syds_garage, is “sadly a lot of hate” directed at her.

Seyfried responded bluntly, saying, “Well, f— TikTok! F— TikTok!” highlighting the intensity of online negativity celebrities can encounter.

Sweeney has dealt with online criticism throughout her career. Earlier this year, she faced backlash over her American Eagle jeans campaign, which some viewers claimed promoted certain physical ideals. The campaign’s tagline, “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans,” sparked controversy for being misinterpreted as a pun on “great genes.”

“I was honestly surprised by the reaction,” Sweeney told People magazine. “I did it because I love the jeans and love the brand. I don’t support the views some people chose to connect to the campaign.” She emphasized that her intent was not to promote divisive messages.

Sweeney added that she has historically avoided responding to press coverage, but now believes silence can exacerbate misunderstanding. “I hope this new year brings more focus on what connects us instead of what divides us,” she said.

The Housemaid, starring Sweeney and Seyfried, is set to open in theaters on December 19 through Lionsgate. The film’s promotion, including candid interviews like the Vanity Fair lie detector test, has brought attention to both the project and the challenges celebrities face with social media scrutiny.
